Why Do Women Get PTSD More Often than Men?

Dr. Shaka Ssali, host of Straight Talk Africa's TV and Radio broadcast, discussed PTSD and Gender with David Shapiro, President of African PTSD Relief/

There are many causes of PTSD. Everyone could be affected by war or violence, but rape is something that affects women, predominantly. For example, in one of the schools we tested in South Africa, 80% of the women entering this college had been sexually abused. That means that a much greater percentage of women would have PTSD, even in the same environment.

Pemba first describes the events that led to her becoming a refugee and the symptoms of PTSD that she suffered for years after those events. She then describes the relief and improvement she has felt since learning TM.

"My mind can function again. Before I could not sleep at all for days on end. Now I can sleep. Before that I would constantly think about my troubles... constantly thinking about the children I have lost and don't know where they are today.... It's meditation that rescued me."
                                                                                                            (Pemba)
"This Is Wonderful"

"Now, even if you want me to cry, I can't, I can't. It is not there  in me.... I am free. I am a free woman. ...This is wonderful, for me and for the whole world"
                                                                                                          (Esperance)
